Dive into the world of percussion at our Discovery Day, an event for those eager to explore the dynamic and diverse realm of percussion instruments. The highlight of the day will be the presence of two distinguished percussionists, David Montgomery and Angus Wilson.

David Montgomery, Section Principal Percussion of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra since 1994 and Principal Percussion of the Australian World Orchestra since 2011, offers a wealth of experience in both performance and education. His contributions to music composition, education, and his role in leading percussion ensembles showcase his dedication to advancing percussion music. Montgomery’s work includes the development of new percussion syllabi for the Australian Music Examinations Board and numerous compositions that have been featured by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Angus Wilson, known for his innovative performances and contributions to the percussion community, brings a fresh and contemporary approach to the art form. His work spans a variety of settings, from solo performances to ensemble collaborations, marking him as a versatile and inspiring figure in the percussion world. Together, Montgomery and Wilson will guide participants through workshops and performances, offering insights into both the technical and expressive aspects of percussion across a range of instruments. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of percussion’s role in both solo and ensemble settings, equipped with new skills and inspiration for their musical journeys.

About 2024 Discovery Days

The School of Music takes pride in hosting Discovery Days that serve a twofold purpose. Firstly, these events extend targeted support to woodwind, brass and percussion students, and by extension, their teachers. They are tailored to address specific needs of their instrument groups, fostering an environment that nurtures students and supports their aspirations, particularly those who may contemplate music studies at the tertiary level.

Secondly, these events are an opportunity to provide invaluable insights and information regarding the study of tertiary music at The University of Queensland, encompassing both the Bachelor of Music program and a diverse range of dual degree options. Through these engaging events, aspiring musicians can explore the wide array of academic offerings and resources available at the university, enabling them to make informed decisions about their educational journey.

The School of Music proudly offers a variety of dual degree options that combine music with other disciplines, attracting a growing number of music students each year. Gone are the days when students were compelled to relinquish their passion for music in favour of pursuing other areas of study. Now, they can wholeheartedly pursue their musical passion while simultaneously expanding their knowledge in other chosen disciplines such as Arts, Science, or Education. This integration allows students to enjoy a well-rounded education and embrace their diverse interests.
