The School of Music at The University of Queensland is recognised as one of Australia's leading music institutions. Over the last decade it has played an increasing role within the music discipline nationally and now holds a leading position in graduate studies, in composition, music education, twentieth century music and music therapy. Other areas of specialisation include musicology and practical studies. Staff members of the School are acclaimed nationally and internationally as performers, teachers, composers and researchers.
Music is the ultimate course for integrating the physical, the emotional and the intellectual. Musicians need high-level skills in all three areas if they are to respond to the rapidly changing demands of the performing arts industries of the coming decades. The School's programs are designed to turn out flexible, imaginative graduates strong in musical mind, body and "soul", and worthy inheritors of the destiny of a truly creative nation. The School of Music offers a range of programs and courses to those for whom music is one of several interests:
The Bachelor of Music program provides an intense, four-year or five-year professional training period in one of the four specialisations of performance, musicology, music education (combining Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education dual degree) and composition.
Bachelor of Arts students may build a single or double major from two MUSC course entry points (depending on existing musical knowledge) as part of their degree. The popular music courses, "From Elvis to Madonna", "Music in Popular Culture", and "Introduction to Music Technology" attract both international and domestic students as no previous musical knowledge is required for any of these courses.
Graduate studies have seen rapid expansion in the past few years and attract international and domestic students to composition, musicology, performance, music therapy, music education, aural and choral studies and instrumental pedagogy in programs ranging from graduate certificates and graduate diplomas through to masters and doctoral degrees.
There is a good rapport between staff and students which is reflected in activities beyond the School's programs. The School of Music is a major provider of concerts to the University and wider community and supports music conferences, workshops and seminar series.
