Course Planning and Enrolment
Once admitted to a program, a student needs to study carefully the relevant program schedules (listings of courses which have to be taken to complete the program) both in this School Handbook and the relevant University Handbooks.
Queries about course planning and enrolment may be directed to the School of Music. Details about course ensembles and instruments should be directed, in the first instance, to the School's Administrative Officer. Where the permission of the Head of the School is required to undertake a course, a written request should be made to the Head of School stating name, student number, address and phone, fax or e-mail contact information. It is not normally necessary to make an appointment to secure that permission.
Please observe that, although Music staff are willing to assist with course planning and ultimately will approve or reject enrolment in proposed courses, you must initiate, sign and deliver your own enrolment through my SI-net by the specified time (details are listed in the Enrolment Guide sent with your offer package).
Incoming BMus students will be allocated to practical teachers for their individual tuition. Once a practical teacher has been approved, no changes are permitted without the permission of the Head of School. All BMus students are required to attend an approved Ensemble as part of their Practical Studies requirement in years 1 & 2 and in the Performance strand in years 3 & 4. Head of School reserves the right to require any BMus student to take a particular ensemble.
Course Selection Days
The Faculty of Arts offers course selection and course advice. During Semester 1 Orientation Week, a half-day is allocated at the UQ Centre where Representatives from Schools within the Faculty of Arts will be in attendance to answer your queries. (details are available in the official Orientation Guide publication each year or online at www.uq.edu.au/orientation).
Timetable, Lectures, Seminars, Tutorials
The School's timetable of courses is available at the University website www.uq.edu.au. However, a semester timetable, including tutorial and seminar times, is also displayed on the School Noticeboard in the Foyer at the commencement of each semester. Practical tuition times are arranged individually between the student and the lecturer in the first week of first semester. Note: tutorials normally commence in the second week of each semester.
Music courses are taught in a wide variety of formats, from individual lessons and small-group seminars to large-group lectures. Students are advised that Group A-C optional courses may be suspended if enrolments are insufficient or staff unavailable.
The Provision of Alternative Academic Programs for Students with a Disability
The University of Queensland is committed to maximising opportunities for students with disabilities. Sometimes a student's disability will impact on their capacity to complete program requirements or have implications for professional practice or registration following completion of their program. The University can provide advice on program requirements and professional registration, as well as investigate the possibility of providing an alternative program, if necessary. If you have a disability and are considering enrolment at the University of Queensland, please contact the Disability Adviser on (07) 3365 1757. Your disclosure is confidential and is only necessary to ensure you receive the appropriate support.
