 Scholarships, Awards and Prizes


This section briefly describes the awards available expressly  for competition by music students. The values, requirements, and application  procedures of these awards vary greatly, and students are urged to study  the list carefully to determine those most appropriate to their plans and achievements.  The Music Office can provide further details and application forms for most of these awards.

Entrance and Achievement Scholarships

The University of Queensland and St Leo’s College Music Achievement Scholarship
Established in 2009 and maintained by an annual gift from The University of Queensland and St Leo's College, this scholarship is to assist students who are high academic achievers and who excel in the practice of music. The value of each scholarship will be paid directly to St Leo's College to contribute to the cost of accommodation at the College. The value of the scholarship is $6,000 and is paid directly to St Leo's College.

The University of Queensland and Duchesne College Music Achievement Scholarship
Established in 2009 and maintained by an annual gift from The University of Queensland and Duchesne College, this scholarship is to assist students who are high academic achievers and who excel in the practice of music. The value of each scholarship will be paid directly to Duchesne College to contribute to the cost of accommodation at the College. The value of the scholarship is $6,000 and is paid directly to Duchesne College.

Howard & Gladys Sleath Scholarships
Up to four scholarships may be awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School, to students of outstanding ability auditioning on violin, viola  or cello for entry to the first year of the Bachelor of Music program. The tenure of the scholarships is one year. The value of a scholarship is $2000. The scholarship stipend will be payable in 2 equal instalments at the beginning of each semester. A scholarship may be withdrawn if the  scholarship holder discontinues or withdraws from full-time study or, in the opinion of the Head of School, does not maintain satisfactory academic performance.

Dalley-Scarlett Memorial Scholarship
A triennial award to enable a Queensland student of music to undertake further study or research, either in Australia or overseas, in one or more of the following fields: composition, conducting, musicology, organ.
[Open to suitably qualified applicants from both The University of Queensland and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University.]

The scholarship has now been awarded for 2010.
The next award is expected to be made for 2013.

Hugh Brandon Prize
An annual award to the Bachelor of Music student who achieves the highest mark in the course MUSC3170.  All eligible students will be considered for this prize; no application is required. This prize was established in honour of Mr Hugh Brandon, a former staff member (1945-52) and Senior Lecturer (1952-73) of the School of Music.

Musicology Prize
A $250 annual award established in 1994 by a gift from Mr Noel Wilmott for the student who shows the greatest proficiency in the courses MUSC4410 and MUSC4420 with a minimum grade of 6. All eligible students will be considered for this prize; no application is required.

Neil Brice Memorial Fund
A fund established for the purpose of providing assistance to students suffering financial disability, preference being given to those studying in the fields of music and physics. More information on this fund will be available shortly.

Performance Scholarships and Prizes

String Bach Prize
A prize of $100 will be awarded to the student enrolled in the BMus course at the School of Music who gives the most outstanding performance of a  movement or movements from an unaccompanied work by J.S.Bach of up to  six minutes in length. Eligible instruments are orchestral strings and  guitar. Applications forms are available from the School of Music office toward the end of first semester and must be accompanied by a $5.00 entry fee. The competition will take place early in second semester.

4MBS Musica Viva Sid Page Memorial Prize in Chamber Music
An annual prize, maintained by 4MBS Classic FM, shared among the ensemble consisting of up to 8 University students who give the most outstanding performance in the annual competition held each year.  Recipients also receive a season ticket to the Musica Viva concert series. The competition is held in semester 2 each year and is judged by an advisory panel appointed by the Head of School which submits a brief report on each performance to the Head of School together with its recommendations.  Each program must be of 20 to 40 minutes duration; and include 2 pieces from contrasting periods and contrasting styles; and be approved by the Head of School. Application forms are available from the School of Music and must be submitted by the advertised date.  The prize was established in memory of the late Sidney B. Page, who was Deputy Librarian of this University from 1966 to 1972; a member of the Music Faculty Board from 1971 until his death in 1987; and a founding member of the Music Broadcasting Society of Queensland Ltd.

Margaret Nickson Prize in Voice and Accompaniment
This biennial prize of $200, maintained by international soprano diva, Lisa Gasteen, is awarded to the two students enrolled in the School of Music who, as singer and accompanist, give the most outstanding performance in a special competition. The prize money is divided equally between the singer and accompanist.  A singer and an accompanist wishing to enter the competition in the year of offer, must lodge a joint application with the Head of School by the date set by the Head.  Applications listing the items to be performed must be submitted for the approval of the Head of School on the prescribed form which is available from the School of Music.  Students who have been awarded the prize in one year may not enter the competition in a subsequent year in the same partnership. The program must be presented by the same two performers throughout and must consist of one work by G.F. Handel or H. Purcell, one Lied sung in German, one melodie sung in French and one work of the performers’ choice. A student may participate in the competition in any year both as a singer and as an accompanist in separate partnerships, but may not participate in the same capacity in more than one partnership. The competition shall be adjudicated by a panel to be appointed biennially by the Head of School.  The prize will be offered next in 2009.  

Music Students' Guild Wind Performance Prize
An annual award maintained by the Music Students' Guild valued at $150. The prize will be awarded to the enrolled student of a School of Music program who gives the best performance on a wind instrument, in a competition held each year in September/October. The performance comprises two contrasting pieces, including one from the twentieth century. Entrants must be financial members of the Music Students' Society. Applications are called for early in the second semester.

The Sleath String Performance Prize
A first ($500) and second ($250) prize will be awarded to the most outstanding performances played on an orchestral bowed string instrument at the competition.  BMus students who have not previously won first prize can enter this annual competition, held in approximately September or October.  Details of the competition are publicised early in second semester each year.

Florence Davey Pianoforte Scholarship
The scholarship is to enable the scholar to pursue further study (full-time for approx. 2 years) overseas at an institution offering suitable programs.  Applicants shall be Australian citizens and shall have been domiciled in Queensland for a period of not less than 5 years immediately preceding the date of application; shall be under 26 years of age on that date; and shall be in the final year of a program leading to an undergraduate degree in music at a tertiary institution in Queensland or shall have been granted such a degree within 3 years of the date of application for the scholarship. The award is based on the candidate's undergraduate record, the suitability of the proposed postgraduate course and the quality of performance in a public pianoforte recital. The scholarship shall be offered at such frequency as to allow the income of the fund to accumulate between periods of tenure to preserve the capital of the fund.  The next award of this scholarship is not expected to be made before 2011.  Applications will close on 30 June in the year before the scholarship will commence.

Ethel Osborn Scholarship
A biennial award to assist a singing student from the University or the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University, to undertake postgraduate study of singing either in Australia or overseas. Applicants must be not more than 28 years of age and shall be a student of the University enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Music program; a student in the Queensland Conservatorium of Music at a stage in the program which in the opinion of the Head of School of Music is at least equivalent to the third year of the Bachelor of Music program; or a person granted an award from the University or from the Conservatorium.  The award will be based on candidates' vocal skills as demonstrated in a public competition, their academic records and their proficiency in at least two European languages other than English. This scholarship will next be advertised in 2010, with applications closing on 30 June.

Composition Prize

Percy Brier Memorial Prize
An annual award (currently valued at approximately $1400) to the student who submits the composition of greatest promise under the conditions imposed for that year. Different types of compositions are prescribed each year. The detailed conditions of the prize are announced by the Head of School of Music towards mid-year. Students in any University program may apply.

Entries are now open for 2009 – closing date Friday 6 November 2009.
In 2009, the prize will be awarded for a composition of 5-10 minutes for any solo instrument or voice with electronic/computer accomanpaniment or signal processing. Candidates must present a score and/or recording of their composition along with any technical instructions, source code if relevant, or audio accompaniment tracks if relevant.
