 The UQ School of Music welcomes everyone to enjoy all of our free concerts with no bookings necessary.

Primary and secondary school teachers can bring up to 10 students to any Free Lunchtime Concert by

Winner of the Florence Davey Scholarship, pianist John Fisher will present a program of keyboard works by JS Bach, Chopin and Rachmaninoff.

Master of Philosophy (Music) candidate Phoebe Green, with pianist Carson Dron, performs an eclectic viola program including Brahms’ Sonata for Viola & Piano in Eb Op. 120 No. 2, Hindemith’s Solo Viola Sonata Op. 25 No. 1 and A Bird Came Down the Walk by Takemitsu. Phoebe will also premiere David Chisholm’s new work The Arrival with percussionist Eugene Ughetti.

In this exclusive Brisbane solo recital, German violinist Antje Weithaas performs JS Bach’s intimate Sonata No. 1 in G minor, Ysaye’s virtuosic Sonata for Violin Solo Op. 27 No. 2 and JS Bach’s moving Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D minor. Antje Weithaas “develops nuances, details, the subtle shaping of tone shades from the inspiration of the moment, as a sound which can only happen once - unrepeatable and unique.” Fono Forum

Brisbane keyboard percussion specialist Dave Kemp and his ensemble Gamut Percussion showcases the versatility of the marimba, vibraphone and more, in a kaleidoscope of sound.

Final year B.Mus. student Luke Stoker (bass) & UQ Music graduate Brendan Murtagh (piano) feature Vaughan Williams’ valiant Songs of Travel using poetry from Robert Louis Stevenson’s collection of the same name.
 
Fellow final year B.Mus. student Ebony Buckle (soprano) presents an entertaining program including French mélodie À Chloris by Reynaldo Hahn, Broadway songs Taylor the Latte Boy and The Girl in 14G, and an original song, also with Brendan Murtagh.

The Brisbane Wind Soloists are Jeanette Manricks (flute), Graham Evans (clarinet), Ian O’Brien (French horn), Peter Musson (bassoon) and Mitchell Leigh (piano). Their all Russian program will feature Rimsky-Korsakov’s Piano and Wind Quintet and Glinka’s Trio Pathetique in D minor for clarinet, bassoon and piano.

UQ trombone lecturer Greg Aitken with fellow musicians Bob Schultz and Clint Allen (trumpets), Armin Terzer (French horn) and Matthew McGeachin (bass trombone) form Bob Brass Quintet who will entertain us with the music of Previn, JS Bach, Horowitz and Gershwin.

High-energy musicians Topology present a colourful program of original works by members Robert Davidson (double bass), John Babbage (saxophone) and Bernard Hoey (viola), with fellow member Christa Powell (violin) and guest Therese Milanovic (piano).

Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg perform a program of piano works by Lutoslawski, and Australian composers Carl Vine and Matthew Hindson. They will also feature Colin McPhee's Balinese Ceremonial Music and John Adams' Hallelujah Junction.

UQ Research Fellow Dr Katie Zhukov’s piano program brings us Beethoven, Brahms, Bartók, Barber and Beath; namely the Sonata ‘Pathétique’, Rhapsodies Op. 79, Suite Op. 14, Ballade Op. 46 and Lament for Kosovo respectively.

UQ Wind Symphony and UQ Big Band will blow you away with a program of wind and swing classics. The 40-piece UQ Wind Symphony will be under the baton of distinguished conductor, Patrick Pickett CSM. The 20-piece UQ Big Band will be directed to the snap of versatile trumpeter Clint Allen’s fingers.

4MBS Sid Page Memorial Prize in Chamber Music
 
This competition attracts a variety of UQ Music’s best chamber ensembles. Competing today are the Watergate String Quartet and the Heisenberg String Quartet.

Meet the Orchestra, free
12.30pm, TQO Ferry Rd Studios
 
See the UQ Symphony Orchestra perform the lively Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakov. Two of UQ Music’s outstanding final year B.Mus. performance students also feature as soloists – Emily Pitcher, cello, plays the lyrical Andante movement of the Finzi Cello Concerto; Flora Wong, violin, plays an excerpt from Glazunov’s brilliant Violin Concerto. Hosted and conducted by UQ Senior Lecturer Gwyn Roberts.

The UQ Dramatic Interpretation of Song Class, directed by Joseph Ward OBE, will present the Vanity Fair scene from the Vaughan Williams opera The Pilgrim’s Progress. The 29 vocalists in the class will complete the program with various operatic arias and ensembles by Verdi, Puccini and more, accompanied by repetiteur Brachi Tilles.

4MBS Sid Page Memorial Prize in Chamber Music
 
The competition for this highly contested prize continues as the chamber ensembles present more wonderful chamber repertoire.  Competing today are Ebony piano trio and UQ Brass. The winning ensemble will be announced at the conclusion of this concert.

UQ Music student Brentan Schilling and fellow vocalists Michelle McDonald, Kellie Bates and Daniel Jess in Poperacorn will charm you with arias from the popular operas of Bizet and other composers plus songs from the musical Jekyll & Hyde and more.
 
Sofie Haig-Smith (soprano), UQ vocal performance student, will perform a selection of operatic arias.

The So-la Voce Chamber Choir, conducted by Réka Csernyik, will sing a sublime program of English Renaissance songs including John Sheppard’s chant-based Reges Tharsis and Thomas Morley’s rousing Fire, Fire!.

Alexis Kenny (flute), Irit Silver (clarinet) and Nicole Tait (bassoon), principal players of The Queensland Orchestra, bring an evocative program to the stage to include Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6 for flute & bassoon by Villa-Lobos, Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet & Bassoon, Jolivet’s Sonatine for Flute & Clarinet and delightful trio repertoire.

A Journey Through Time

The UQ Symphony Orchestra presents the vibrant first movement of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 and the ever-popular Barber Adagio for Strings. The UQ Chorale’s powerful program will include Hear My Prayer by Purcell. The UQ Wind Symphony performance will feature the opening movement of the Lord of the Rings and more.

Master of Philosophy (Music) candidate cellist Dale Rickert, with pianist Therese Milanovic, presents a stunning program that includes selections from Brahms’ Cello Sonata No. 1 and the Elgar Cello Concerto. Dale will also play Songs of the Wayfarer by Mahler, Sir John Taverner’s Akhmatova Songs and music by Kodály.

The So-la Voce Chamber Choir, conducted by Reka Csernyik, will present their end of year concert with guest performers.

Australian pianist and UQ Piano Performance Fellow Dr Liam Viney performs selections from Janáček’s poignant work On an Overgrown Path and Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor for piano duet with pianist Anna Grinberg, and music by Nigel Westlake and Liszt.

Accomplished Brisbane baritone Shaun Brown presents his Master of Philosophy (Music) recital of French mélodies by Ibert, German lieder by Korngold and art songs by Rachmaninov and Liszt, with pianist Kathryn Bolitho.
 

CONCERT VENUES
 
The Nickson Room is located in the UQ School of Music, Level 4, Zelman Cowen building (51) on the corner of Staffhouse and Jocks Rds, The University of Queensland (St Lucia). Short term metered parking (limit 1.5hr) is available on Staffhouse Rd. All day, long term and multi-level paid car parks are also available on campus. Bus and CityCat ferry services run regularly to the campus.
 
St Ignatius Church is located at 30 Kensington Tce, Toowong. Limited free street parking is available in surrounding streets. The 470 bus service stops nearby on Sherwood Rd.
 
The Long Room is located in Customs House, 399 Queen Street, Brisbane, a short walk from the Riverside CityCat ferry stop. Disabled parking only is available at Customs House. Street parking and paid parking at nearby car parks in Eagle St is available.
 
The TQO Ferry Road Studios are located at 53 Ferry Rd, West End. Limited free onsite parking is available. The 192 bus service stops nearby on Montague Rd. Other bus stops and the West End CityCat terminal are located 700 metres from the studios.
 
The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is located at the corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. There are numerous paid parking facilities and QPAC is adjacent to South Brisbane train station, the Cultural Centre bus station and the South Bank CityCat ferry stop.
 
Disabled access and parking are available at all venues.
