The School of Music is recognised as having one of the best Music Education programs in Australia. Our graduates build on excellent music and music education training by completing Education qualifications which will qualify them for professional registration.
Students can choose one of three ways to complete the program:
Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education
Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education
Bachelor of Arts - Graduate Diploma in Education
In these programs, secondary classroom music teaching is the first teaching area and students can choose either instrumental teaching or primary classroom music teaching as their second area.
Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education
The dual degree BMus/BEd is a five-year program that is tailored specifically for students wishing to pursue a career in music education and which will qualify them for professional registration. This program offers students two years of intensive training on the chosen instrument (including voice), and three years of dedicated music education courses. Students in this program have the option of nominating music as both teaching areas (Area Curriculum Study and Second Teaching Area) in the professional year and thereby have the opportunity to qualify for teaching positions in both primary and secondary music classrooms and within the instrumental program. An overview of the BMus/Bed program is available from the website www.uq.edu/study.
Applicants for the BMus/Ed must, in the first instance, apply for a position in the Bachelor of Music (see above). Once an offer for a place in the BMus has been made, the applicant should return the acceptance of offer form, thereby ensuring a place in the BMus. At enrolment time (usually early February) students wishing to enrol in the dual degree enrol in (QTAC code needed)
Please note that an overview of the BMus/Ed program is available from either the School of Music or from the School of Education.
Bachelor of Arts
Students who wish to pursue a career in music education outside the parameters of the BMus/Ed have two options:
- A Bachelor of Arts degree (three years) with the Graduate Diploma of Education (an additional twelve months).
- The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education dual degree (four years).
With either option, students can include music as one or both of their teaching areas. Students who wish to include music as a teaching subject in the professional year of study need to have completed a single major in music as a minimum requirement. However, intending music education students are encouraged to include some of the dedicated music education courses that are additional to the courses scheduled for the single major. A double major in music is strongly advised for students who wish to nominate music as the major teaching area (Area Curriculum Study, Music) in the professional year and is essential for those who choose Music as both teaching areas.
